Providing Safe and Reliable Power

With 10 generation facilities in Alberta and British Columbia, our portfolio includes more than 2,680 megawatts of well-maintained, complementary natural gas-fired generation assets.

We believe our portfolio provides a solid foundation for energy decarbonization across both our Heartland Generation portfolio and the broader Alberta energy industry.

Our Balanced Portfolio

Our portfolio of contracted and merchant facilities provides reliable and efficient baseload power, as well as dispatchable generation with the ability to meet peak electricity demand. Our assets are augmented by our strong commitment to safety and operations excellence, our embedded optimization and marketing expertise, and our innovative thinking, which together will allow us to deliver compelling value to our customers and stakeholders.

Contracted assets
Blank

Our contracted fleet includes our Scotford, Muskeg River, Primrose and McMahon generation facilities which have aggregate capacity of 617 MW. These facilities provide critical behind-the-fence cogeneration supporting investment grade industrial hosts. Additionally, long-term power purchase agreements with a weighted average life of approximately 17 years create stable and long-term cash flows. Our contracted assets rank as some of the lowest carbon intensity fossil-fuel power facilities in Alberta, resulting in low-cost, energy efficient electricity for our customers.

Merchant assets
PEAKER

With 719 MW of capacity, our highly flexible and efficient merchant portfolio includes our Joffre, Poplar Hill, Rainbow Lake and Valleyview facilities. Our peaking assets provide highly flexible and reliable energy directly to the Alberta merchant power market with significant long-term cash flow potential. With the ability to respond quickly to changes in energy supply and demand, peaker assets are a natural complement to renewable generation in the province, serving as a critical backstop for intermittent energy sources, including wind and solar.

CONVERTED

As the first large-scale Alberta generator to completely transition off coal, our converted fleet includes our Battle River and Sheerness Generating Stations which have an aggregate capacity of 1,350 MW. Originally constructed as coal-fired facilities, these units have been converted to natural gas, which has led to a 45-50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensities, depending on generation factor. These conversions allow us to extend the operating and economic lives of these facilities and supports meaningful decarbonization investment through proximity to key Alberta infrastructure.
