The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer is a member of a multi-discipline engineering team tasked with executing improvement projects, leading major maintenance activities, and supporting site operations and maintenance requirements.

Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, the I&C Engineer is responsible for all aspects of project development, design, implementation, and closure in compliance with the Heartland Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP), Management of Change (MOC). The I&C Engineer also provides consistent, comprehensive, and professional support to the station operations and maintenance departments in areas such as troubleshooting, root cause analysis, maintenance practices, outage planning and execution, and the development of technical standards and operating guidelines.

What you’ll be doing:  

  • Manage and support the execution of studies, projects, and maintenance initiatives in alignment with the Heartland PPMP, MOC processes and project management best practices.
  • Oversee the work of independent consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with contracted services and site requirements.
  • Prepare and review internal and external technical documents, ensuring accuracy and identifying concerns and opportunities.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strategies for the reliable operation and maintenance of site instrumentation and ICS (Industrial Control Systems) and associated equipment.
  • Provide technical support and recommendations on all aspects of station equipment, operations, and maintenance.
  • Lead and support major maintenance activities.
  • Contribute to the development of the annual engineering business plan and long-range budget forecasts.
  • Participate in audits and implement recommendations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain predictive and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Lead and support troubleshooting efforts and develop viable solutions.
  • Manage the site commodity metering process, including compliance, maintenance, and committee leadership.
  • Oversee Industrial Controls System (ICS) service agreements, maintenance, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Promote a culture of safety leadership.
  • Adhere to training requirements and contractor safety qualification and management requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work processes.
  • Ensure prompt reporting and investigation of incidents, and timely completion of follow-up actions.

What you must have:

  • Engineering degree from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA, or meet the requirements of the APEGA Inter- Provincial Mobility program.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience in power generation, or a comparable industry.
  • Technical knowledge of the combined cycle power generation process and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of power generation industry organizations, standards, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding, and the ability to apply applicable Acts, Regulations, and Codes.
  • Ability to execute in a dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Desire to seek feedback to improve quality of deliverables and to develop existing and new expertise.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and cloud-based business applications.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license

This position is located at our Joffre Cogeneration Facility near Red Deer, Alberta.
